The Hunt for a Car

My daughter does some day care about 30 miles away, and also Walmart Spark and Instacart deliveries on occasion. This means she drives a lot. Lately she has been using our Sonata a lot, as her 2016 Nissan Pathfinder began showing signs of, well, death, frankly. The motor in the 2016 Pathfinder, the 3.5 liter V6, a great engine at one time, would blow smoke on occasion. Additionally, all Nissans with the CVTs, on virtually all of Nissan’s offerings, even the 4×4 Pathfinder, are doomed. That transmission is garbage. So she began looking for an economical used car to fill her needs.

Her Needs

What she wanted was good gas mileage, inexpensive price, and the ability to car camp. These were her top three priorities, each equally weighted. You see, she loves going camping with her friends, but like me, loathes sleeping in a tent on the ground. There comes a point in life where, albeit in nature, living like a homeless person, well, plain sucks.

So, a hatch back was necessary. A decent sized cargo area beneath the hatch was necessary, so many reasons. Fold flat rear seats were mandatory. Fold flat back seats were mandatory as well. Oh, another item was important as well, no CVT, or Continuously Variable Transmission. These band of steel transmissions, although ingenious in theory, have a bad track record. They are not durable. They will leave you stranded with a high repair bill. So, no. Sorry, not sorry.

Her quiet hunt eventually led to…

The 2024 Chevy Trax

Yet, it took some time to get there. You may remember the 2023 and older Trax. HIDEOUSLY UGLY CARS! These were not even on her radar. At all. What she was looking to buy was a used Kia Niro, or possibly a Toyota Prius. Great mileage in both, and the Niro would probably fulfil her car caping needs too. However, on a whim she texted me the day before Thanksgiving that she had seen the new 2024 Chevrolet Trax and asked if I wanted to go with her to the local dealership to test drive one that night. Being a car nut, of course I did!

She test drove an RS2 model, and riding with her, I was pretty impressed. It was fairly quick. The car was well appointed. The newly redesigned body was bigger, and attractive. No more ugly upside down bath tub here! However, a couple items were still not checked off the list for her. She would only settle for the lowest model, the LS, which stickered at just over $21000.00. This, in 2024, a brand new car for $21k?!? And an EPS 32 Hwy 28 City, good, but not great. My main concern was the tiny motor, a 1.2 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder. Can you say Geo Metro? Yet, an 8.5 second 0-60 is not horrible at all.

The Hunt was Still on

Being incredibly smart (and strategic), my daughter decided that Black Friday would be THE day to car shop. People would be trading in cars in droves, so she might find that elusive hybrid Niro she was wanting. I was pushing her towards the hybrid Hyundai Ionic, a WAY better looking car with even better mileage than the Niro and the Prius. So the day after Thanksgiving we headed out to check Carmax in Murrieta, a couple miles north of Temecula, so we could also swing by and check out the 2024 Chevy Trax LS Paradise Chevy had on their lot. So, Carmax would have to earn her business.

2024 Check Trax vs Niro and Ionic

The Kia Niro hybrid. In a word or two? Well, this was a 3 year old car with about 60k miles on it. This car had good pick up, but honestly, it was a (here are the two words) dumpster fire. It felt like something from k-mart. Cheap. The driver display looked dumb, cheap, childlike. The car rattled some, but if your focus is solely on great mileage, this may be a car for you.

The Hyundai Ionic hybrid was MILES AND MILLENIA better than the Niro. It was the difference between shopping for clothes at Walmart, then going to Nordstrom. Just, wow. However, the 3 year old Ionic had a lot of miles on it, and was about $9000 more than the Niro, but at the same time got even better gas mileage than the hybrid Niro. From there we headed across the street, over to…

Paradise Autos (Chevy/Cadillac) in Temecula – the 2024 Chevy Trax?

Paradise autos - Dealer of the Year

When we arrived, we spoke with Ryan, who was fairly new to the car sales game. He was friendly, but realistic. What people don’t understand is that 90% or more of the people who visit a dealership do not buy. The kick the tires, cross their arms, and assume the Stealership will try and rip them off. Ryan knows, as I do, that “I’ll be back” means the same as it does in all sales. Later means never. We got the info from Ryan, how many 2024 Trax LS’s they had (1) from Ryan, got his card, and let him know there was a good chance we’d be back later.

Much to his surprise, we did call him later, and let him know that my daughter was interested in buying new. After we left the first time we went to…

Carmax

I had never been to a Carmax. I had seen their lots from the freeway, and wondered at the mass of cars choking their lot. Driving around, I see a fair number of Carmax stickers on the backs of cars, so I was curious. Her main reason for going to Carmax was to get a valuation on her 2016 4×4 Nissan Pathfinder. Every dealership she spoke with said they would honor or exceed whatever Carmax offered. Additionally, Carmax showed there was a kia Niro hybrid, a couple Prius, and one or more Ionics availably. Not necessarily at the Murrieta lot, but maybe. so we went.

But first we went to DCH Kia of Temecula. There she had hoped to find a Kia Niro that fit her needs. 30,000 miles or so, with decent price. They also had a couple Prius there.

If you know me at all, I detest the Toyota Prius. I think they are all ugly. Additionally, the main reason I like the Honda Insight and the Hyundai Ionic is that their drivers, unlike Prius drivers, do not drive like complete and utter self-righteous douchbags. Starts with a P and ends in an S, 5 letters, what is it?

The carman rep was great. Quintin? Quincy? I don’t remember his name, but he was stellar. However, Carmax itself was not. First, the place smelled like an old rental apartment. Second, they had almost none of the cars me daughter was interested in. 3rd, Carmax WAY lowballed her trade in by about $4000. So, in a way…

Carmax Failure lead to the purchase of the 2024 Chevy Trax

Now, bear in mind that my daughter had not planned an all day outing to look at and possibly buy a car. I did, however. That is the way it goes. After 3 hours burnt at Carmax, we shot down the freeway to Paradise Autos (Chevy/Cadillac) in Temecula to see if we could swing a deal on a brand new 2024 Chevy Trax. In other words, it became a mission.

In their phone calls back and forth whiule we were killing time at Carmax, Ryan at Paradise had told my daughter that they did have one LS 2024 Chevy Trax on the lot, but couldn’t find it. As we left Carmax, Ryan broke the news: he could bot find it because it was in back, being prepped, as it had sold. “Can I please just look at it? I don’t wat to drive it, I just want to see what an LS is”. Ryan got permission from the sales manager to see it, but we could not open the door. So we went over. a BEAUTIFUL gray 2024 Chevy Trax awaited us. Gorgeous. Ok, the deal is on, get us an LS!

Into the Showroom

Very few things bother me more than sitting down at a sales desk. I have bought so many cars, and I have only been more uncomfortable at the desk were you sign all the paperwork. That is ALWAYS where dealers pull the hijinx. The second place is at the saleman’s desk. ‘Let me go ask my manager” yeah yeah, stop the game. However, when Ryan would leave the desk, I was 100% sure he was batting for us. thr daughter was going to get her 2024 Chevy Trax LS. The dealership was calling all over looking to trade for one.

They Found One!

Ryan and the sales manager came back a little later, they found a 2024 Chevy Trax LS! But it was black. That was one of the colors my daughter did NOT want, too hard to keep it clean. And it has the convenience package, a like $300 additional that is well worth it. Deal.

It’s Been about 9 days now

She absolutely loves her car! she’s getting about 27 mpg with mixed driving.  The ONLY negative about the car so far is, there is no real lumbar support in the seats. A three hour drive is, well, not as computable as it could be. Aside from that and the cars wifi, which is basically useless, the 2024 Chevy Trax has been spot on perfect.

About the dealership Experience

Ok, I mentioned earlier that I dislike car dealerships, and I do. However, all in all, considering a day spent, this was a pretty good experience. Paradise Chevy (paradise autos) did a splendid job for my daughter, and they really did earn our business. That is why I can, with no reservations, recommend them. There’s a reason why they have won Dealer of the Year many times over. And I’d recommend you see Ryan.  He is pictured in the lead picture to this article, look him up, he’s good people.

The bad aspects

The single thing that bugged me the whole time there was this Lojack. You may not know this, but pretty much every dealership has trackers and the ability to shut off your vehicle for repossession should you not make your payments. They have been doing this for years, and Lojack is used for this a lot. However, on the document signing the dealership man, Manny, presented it as a $1465.00 option to be financed. I tried talking my daughter out of this, but she would not bite. They will have it on the car anyway, and girl, you pay for insurance should it get stolen. Therefore, by buying the Lojack, all you’re doing is paying for the dealer to take your car back. an honest document man would have backed me up on this.

The last fly in the ointment was the antennae in back being already broken off at delivery. Brand new car, with a broken part, that should not happen. Further, I had to point it out, and I know they knew.
